Many offices in Qatar still run on a phone system bought a decade ago: a box in the server room, a handful of desk phones, and a maintenance contract nobody reads. It works until the company opens a second branch, sends sales staff into the field or wants to answer customers on WhatsApp and the web as well as by phone. That is usually the moment a cloud phone system comes up.
This guide explains how a 3CX system fits the way telephony works in Qatar, what happens to your existing numbers, how to plan the switch for a single office or several branches, and what it costs in riyals.
How business telephony works in Qatar
Telecommunications in Qatar are regulated by the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), and public phone numbers on the +974 range are provided by licensed operators such as Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar. A phone system like 3CX does not replace your operator; it sits behind your lines and decides what happens to each call: which department rings, who answers after hours, which calls are recorded and how they appear in reports.
That gives two ways to connect 3CX to the outside world:
- Operator SIP trunk. Where your operator offers a SIP trunk for your business account, the lines arrive over the internet or a dedicated link and connect to 3CX directly. This is the cleanest setup and scales by adding channels.
- Gateway on existing lines. If your numbers are on traditional analogue lines or an ISDN/E1 connection, a small gateway in your office converts them so 3CX can use them. You keep your numbers and contract unchanged.
Ask your operator account manager which options are available for your account before you plan the move. We design the 3CX side around whatever your operator provides; we do not resell Qatar numbers ourselves.
What changes for your team
- Extensions everywhere. Staff answer the company number on a desk phone, in a browser or in the 3CX mobile app, so field sales and remote staff stay reachable without sharing personal numbers.
- An auto attendant in Arabic and English. Callers choose their language first, then the department. Record the prompts in a natural Gulf-friendly Arabic voice and a clear English one.
- Office hours that match Qatar. Set Sunday-to-Thursday working hours, Friday and Saturday weekend rules, shorter Ramadan hours and public holidays such as National Day, so after-hours calls go to voicemail or an on-call mobile automatically.
- Queues and reports. See missed calls, waiting times and who answered, instead of guessing why customers say nobody picks up.
- Call recording for quality and disputes, with a clear notice to callers and a retention period you decide.
Planning for one office or several branches
A single office of ten to forty people is the simplest case: one 3CX system, one connection to your operator, and phones or apps for each person. Companies with a showroom in Doha, a warehouse in the industrial area and staff in Lusail or Al Wakrah gain the most, because every site joins one system: colleagues call each other by extension at no cost, and a customer can be transferred between branches without hanging up.
Groups operating across the GCC can also connect branches in other countries to the same system, so a call to the Qatar number can reach a specialist in the UAE office as an internal transfer, with each country keeping its own local numbers and operator contracts.
Licence size: simultaneous calls, not users
3CX is sized by simultaneous calls, the number of conversations that can happen at once, rather than by headcount. A business with 30 staff rarely has more than eight calls running at the same moment, so an 8-call licence often covers them. Contact centres and busy reception desks need more. The edition matters too: Basic covers core calling, Pro adds features such as call-processing scripts and a custom web address, and the Enterprise/AI tier adds AI features such as transcription and agents.
| Plan | Simultaneous calls | Users and extensions | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3CX Basic | 8 | Up to 40 | QAR 115.79 |
| 3CX Pro | 8 | Up to 40 | QAR 154.38 |
| 3CX Enterprise / AI | 8 | Up to 40 | QAR 223.44 |
| 3CX Basic | 16 | Up to 80 | QAR 231.57 |
Larger plans up to 48 simultaneous calls are on our 3CX page. Operator line rental and call charges are billed separately by your operator, and desk phones or a gateway are one-off purchases if you need them.
A switch-over plan without missed calls
- List your numbers, lines, departments and the current call flow, including who answers what after hours.
- Confirm with your operator whether a SIP trunk is available, or plan a gateway for the existing lines.
- Build the 3CX system, extensions, Arabic and English prompts and office-hour rules, then test with internal calls.
- Install apps and phones, train reception and team leaders, and run both systems in parallel for a day if possible.
- Move the lines at a quiet time, usually a Thursday evening, and check incoming and outgoing calls on every number.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my existing Qatar phone numbers with 3CX?
Yes. Your numbers stay with your licensed operator. 3CX connects to them through the operator's SIP trunk where available for your account, or through a gateway on your existing lines.
Do my staff need desk phones?
No. Each person can use the 3CX app on a mobile phone or in a browser. Many offices keep desk phones only for reception and meeting rooms.
Can 3CX play an Arabic and English welcome message?
Yes. The auto attendant can ask callers to choose a language first and then route them to the right department, with separate prompts for each language.
How many simultaneous calls do I need?
Count the most conversations that happen at the same moment on a busy day, not your staff. Offices of up to about 40 people usually start with 8 simultaneous calls; busy reception desks and contact centres need more.
How much does 3CX cost in Qatar?
On 23 October 2026 our 3CX plans started at QAR 115.79 a month, billed yearly, for 8 simultaneous calls and up to 40 users. Operator line rental and call charges are separate.
